The future of TV is the internet

Internet TV has already surpassed regular television and other media. The new Internet and multimedia 2007 report by Edison Media Research surveyed consumers 12 years and older at the beginning of this year and has found the Internet (33 percent) is increasingly rapidly in television (36 percent) as “The most essential. ”
In a similar study five years ago, television has led the Internet by a wide margin, 39 to 22 percent. Radio netted a 26 per cent “most critical ” response in the 2002 study.
The Internet is valued much more by the 12 to 44 years age group, while the older age brackets bias toward regular television as more essential.

“With Web 2.0, and Internet access on various devices, such as the iPhone where it is possible to the Internet in your pocket, there ‘ no way in the interest of the Internet to go anywhere but up, “Jason Hollins, vice president at Edison Media Research, said internetnews.com . “In almost every category we interviewed, the Internet has doubled or tripled in the case of consumers ‘minds it bleeds into all aspects of their lives.”

Doubtful won Newspapers the highest marks (35 percent) for “Least important ” medium. The Internet, which was in the lead at 33 percent in 2002, was named by only 24 percent of respondents as “less critical. “Radio and television were appointed less essential by 18 percent of respondents.

television and radio still tops in certain categories.

But the results weren ‘all a slam-dunk of the Internet. For example, when it comes to learning about new music, radio remains by far the largest medium, listed by 48 percent of respondents, compared with the Internet (25 percent) and television (12 percent). But the Internet is a 9 percent share in 2002, while radio has dropped by 63 per cent in 2002.

television still has a firm grip (62 percent) as the primary source top people turn in the case is a hot topic. Again, the Internet has made inroads, eating in what was the 74 percent response for television in 2002. The Internet has increased from 8 to 18 percent in 2007 as the prime source of people turn to the coverage is a hot topic.

Edison said it conducted telephone interviews in the past two months based on a national random sample of 1855 people, aged 12 and above.

Every TV program and video ever made on your ipod or cell mobile phone

Imagine holding a whole years worth of TV programming on your ipod and even more…

Holding a massive amount of video or music information on a device not much larger than a credit card may have seemed crazy a few years ago but that was before the apple ipod.

Nikesh Arora Googles VP of European operations speaking at the FT World Communications conference told the attendees that within the next few years the ipods and similar devices will have an almost unlimited storage capacity.

He said that within 12 years an ipod could carry every video ever made and hold all commercial music ever released.

Although this sounds great, when you think about it the way the mobile phone and internet markets are converging the reality is that you will already can or soon will be able to download any music or video ever created so storage isnt really an issue…is it ?

Free Google Flip Video Camcorder --No purchase necessary

OK, strike "no purchase necessary." Free Flip video camcorder: "big purchase necessary?"

Google gave big-time advertisers and SEMs (whose clients spend big) a Flip Video Ultra Series camcorder with recording time up to 30 min. and 1GB internal memory.

Search marketer Shimon Sandler recorded an Oscar-worthy short film (YouTubed) of his Google Video Ultra gift being unwrapped. You'll watch the film again and again, if only to get into the Xmas spirit of green envy that children of all ages feel during the Holiday Season.

Google Flip flopped with all the SEMs who only received Google 2GB USB memory cards instead of the Google Flip (with MSRP of $149.99!). The 2GoogleByte USB card was described by our friends at SERoundtable as more or less a lump of coal -- way inferior to last year's Google gift gadget: a sweet digital picture frame.

It would seem only the FTC approves of Google acquisitions these days.

Here at Search Engine Watch, we'll be providing the P.O. Box for Google Customer Returns and the address of the secret Google Gift Exchange location.

Is Web Video Really Hurting TV?

By Melissa Lafsky

The current conventional wisdom is that the rise of Internet video may mean the end of television as we know it — a view that extends to the music industry as well, as we’ve seen before. Viacom’s $1 billion copyright infringement suit against the Google-owned YouTube continues to lumber on, and the TV writers’ strike has led to speculation that the lull in new TV content could drive more viewers to the Web.

As Forbes recently pointed out, much of the TV industry’s anxiety is based on the assumption that entertainment viewership is a zero-sum game — i.e., if more people are watching programming online, then fewer are left to watch TV. But not much data has been offered to prove that sites like YouTube are actually responsible for declining TV ratings. As Koleman Strumpf showed in his paper “The Effect of File Sharing on Record Sales,” the deleterious effects of the Internet on entertainment industry models have a tendency to be overblown. Some evidence even points to Web clips enhancing TV viewership, as programs like The Daily Show see their popularity increase through viral Web distribution.

The Wharton economist Joel Waldfogel (who has a new book out, The Tyranny of the Market) examines this issue in a new working paper, “‘Lost’ on the Web: Does Web Distribution Stimulate or Depress Television Viewing?” He tries to measure the effects of online TV clips, both authorized and unauthorized, on television viewing between 2005 and 2007, using a survey of viewers’ tendencies. To isolate the typical Web viewer (i.e., young people), he restricted his subjects to 287 people on the University of Pennsylvania campus. Here’s what he found:

While I find some evidence of substitution of web viewing for conventional television viewing, time spent viewing programming on the web — 4 hours per week — far exceeds the reduction in weekly traditional television viewing of about 25 minutes. Overall time spent on network-controlled viewing (television plus network websites) increased by 1.5 hours per week….

The effect of web availability depends on whether users watch programming they would already have watched (i.e. if their valuations exceed the “price”). If viewers watch on the web in instances in which their valuations exceed the price, web distribution will cannibalize conventional viewing. On the other hand, if web viewings is drawn from the region of the viewer demand curve where valuations fall short of the price p0, then web distribution will raise consumption without reducing television viewing.

Because of the serial nature of many programs, watching an episode (or an excerpt) on the web can stimulate interest in watching other episodes of the same show on television. This shifts the demand curve out, perhaps raising the number of instances in which people “pay” for conventional television.

Waldfolgel’s reasoning makes perfect sense: the brevity and accessibility of Web clips can raise awareness of a show, give viewers a taste of its content, and thereby entice more viewers to catch the show when it airs on a network. These findings are contrary to the entire modus operandi with which networks have approached Web video, and could provide an entirely new perspective on the future relationship between the two media — not to mention provide a valuable argument for YouTube in its case against Viacom. After all, if those 100,000 unauthorized clips served to stimulate interest in Viacom programs, who’s to say they caused any damage?

Looks worth everything in TV news or just $700k?

David Johnson

In a column on notorious anchorwoman Alycia Lane, Philly Inquirer columnist Karen Heller says that “in local TV, sadly, looks are everything.” Cory hooked into the story of Lane being accused of slugging a cop earlier, discussing the nature of crime and celebrity in newscasters, but we didn’t get the sticker shock of Lane’s salary that Heller provides: $700,000.

The price of one pretty local talking head could buy a lot of serious backpack journalists who can actually do their own credible reporting. The conversation has been hot in my offline circles, so I thought I’d bring it to my favorite online forum. The rise of Internet newscasting and the influx of foreign news products like BBC with more stripped-down productions are revealing that the arms race in American broadcast news has led to an evolutionary dead end where glitz is beating substance to the detriment of the product. And said glitz is so expensive to produce, it isn’t going to be pretty when the leaner operations start becoming more substantial. We lostremoters always praise sites who change to cleaner and simpler redesigns, but we never praise broadcasts for that because they just keep going chyron crazy and slapping on more makeup and adding more “centers” via the magic greenscreen.

LR buddy Michael Rosenblum says the first step is admitting you have a problem. Can we get a New Year’s resolution to curb the madness?

News Corp. sells 8 Fox stations

Cory Bergman

News Corp. has sold eight of its 35 stations to Oak Hill Partners, a private equity firm. The stations sold are: WJW (Cleveland), KDVR (Denver), WGHP (Greensboro), KTVI (St. Louis), WDAF (Kansas City), WITI (Milwaukee), KSTU (Salt Lake) and WBRC (Birmingham). Oak Hill already owns 9 other stations under the name Local TV LLC, and the WSJ reports that the day-to-day operations of all the stations may fall to Tribune. After all, Local TV’s top exec was just hired by Sam Zell to take over Tribune’s broadcast and internet operations.

Online TV & Video: "social revolution" No Longer an Exaggeration

Sighting a pressing TV industry need to monetize the "massive interest in online (video) content," eMarketer.com summarized an Informa Telecoms & Media research report (which I could not find on their site) including numbers that would make almost any venture investor salivate. For example, "In the US alone, revenues are forecast to rise from $538 million in 2006 to nearly $4 billion in 2012."

"These trends are now so pronounced, that the term 'social revolution' no longer seems too much of an exaggeration," said Adam Thomas of Informa.

Personally, today, I was checking out VideoEgg.com which boasts an easy to use video upload, Flash compress, and, yes, video editing platform as well as a pretty impressive online video ad network that's focused on social networking sites.

Does anyone have a good comparison of all these new Web 2.0 video platforms?

Who Are They Killing Off - Could It Be Hiro?

I just watched the preview for next week’s episode of Heroes and when I first saw it I thought to myself, “Who are they killing off?” It’s got be Nikki, but who else? Maybe Nathan, maybe the new girl who is a muscle mimic, maybe Maya, but then…

I was just watching the previews and I think they might kill off Hiro…

When Adam looks down at the ground and Peter says, “let’s go destroy the virus” I thought to myself “Oh my goodness, Adam is looking down at Hiro’s dead body!”

Now, that would be a total shock, but I think it is quite possible. On second thought, I just can’t imagine them killing off Hiro.

Here are the previews, let me know who you think will die?

Top 5 Scenes From Heroes 2×09 Cautionary Tales

Last night’s episode of Heroes (Cautionary Tales) was really good.

I was bummed that Noah Bennet (HRG) didn’t kill Mohinder. I liked Mohinder when the show started, but he has become somewhat “stupid” for a doctor… not killing Sylar when he could, believing the people in “the company”, etc.

Anyway, here are my top 5 scenes from the show:

1. Noah walks out to find West and West flies in and swoops Noah into the air.

2. Hiro stops time to see that Adam Monroe killed his father (looks like I was right with my first guess).

3. Matt Parkman’s interrogation of Mrs. Petrelli was a bit disturbing, but one of the most memorable scenes. Looks like he is turning into a “bad” good guy (if that’s possible).

4. When Noah tells Bob the company dies with him, it sounded like Bob is all that was left to keep the company going. That was a very memorable scene, epsecially when Mohinder shoots Noah.

5. The final scene where Noah regenerates and wakes up saying “Holy Sh..” then the “To be continued” screen appears.

What were your favorite scenes?

Here are previews for next week’s episode of Heroes 2×10 “Truth & Consequences”:

America's Next Top Model: Covergirl of the Week only gets you so far

This week, America's Next Top Model continues a time-honored rite of passage: the Go-See, where aspiring Top Models must try and make their way in the (usually unfamiliar and non-English-speaking) world, pimping themselves out to fashion designers located all over whatever confusing metropolis the models happen to be located in. It's pretty much exactly what you'd expect, based on past seasons cycles, but the final elimination is a whole 'nother thing.

Our top five are very excited for the challenge, and meet up at PT Models, a Shanghai-based agency. Saleisha, she of the bubbly personality, is incredibly excited about the Go-Sees. Heather...is not. As usual, they have to run all over the city, meet with a bunch of designers, and make it back on time. NOT as usual, they get a translator to go with them, and a cab. Is Shanghai that much more difficult for a non-Chinese speaker to navigate than Tokyo, or Bangkok? Saleisha still claims that "you're on your own trying to find the designer's location." Heather, sadly, manages to get lost. Like, completely lost. Uh-oh.

Chantal, hilariously enough, has to wear a sheer dress while wearing hot pink underwear. She doesn't get great reviews for her walk, since the underwear is rather distracting. The first designer finds Saleisha dull, while Bianca impresses with her personality and her walk. So clearly, China is Bizzaro Land. Oh, and Heather? Still lost. When she finally makes it to her first (and only) designer, she gets praise for her look, but not her walk. Jenah's walk also gets criticized, along with her personality. China is harsh, yo. Saleisha, for her part, refuses to point Bianca in the right direction to her next location. Oooh, the claws come out! And then Chantal slams Saleisha for sucking up to the designers. (Before doing the exact same thing herself...thanks, editors!)

Heading back to home base is difficult, to say the least. Traffic is terrible, and Saleisha and Bianca are the only two to make it back in time. Wow, that may be the fewest ever. Heather, of course, beats herself up about being late. The other girls try to keep her from being so hard on herself, and even allow for a little primal screaming. That night, they all head out on the town, and are met by the lady from PT Models, who names Bianca the winner of the challenge. She lands a very unimpressive billboard for the Beijing Olympics ad campaign.

At the photo shoot location, the girls discover that Nigel will be their photographer (no pressure!), and Chinese lions and dragons will be their co-models, competing for attention in the photo. The styling is an odd mix of East-meets-80's. Jenah busts out the cocky sarcasm with Nigel, which is a bit risky, considering CariDee's experience in the past. She also privately criticizes his style of directing her, which she says threw her off. And it apparently did, since her shoot was way worse than usual. Her final shot is good, because she's apparently incapable of taking a bad picture, but she gets a talking-to from Nigel about her sarcastic sense of humor, and from Tyra about her arrogant attitude. Saleisha, on the other hand, completely rocks it. China IS Bizzaro Land! Nigel says she was his favorite to shoot, and she came up with a really interesting final shot.

Bianca only does an okay job at the shoot, but gets praise for her Go-Sees. Her final photo is strong in the body, but weak in the face. Chantal has a trouble with her posing, and gets criticized for being 20 minutes late back from Go-Sees, and for the aforementioned pink underwear. The judges love her final photo, though. Heather does well in spots, but second-guesses herself. She gets gasps of horror for being so late and making it to so few Go-Sees, and gets a mini-runway tutorial. Her photo gets great reviews, but Nigel says she was too stiff during the shoot. I'm a bit worried for Heather, to be honest, even though she's continued her neverending Covergirl of the Week streak.

In solo deliberations, the judges are all over the place on Bianca's picture. Heather gets praise for her amazing look, but not much else. They love Saleisha's improvement, but criticize Chantal's lack of confidence. Jenah's personality, of course, gets slammed. And now it's time to find out which models will be continuing on to Beijing ("The Fashion Capital of China"), and who will be going home. Saleisha gets the first photo, followed by Bianca and Chantal (what?!), leaving the two most photogenic girls in the bottom two. Wow. If you had asked me last week, I would NOT have seen this coming. In fact, if this were The Bachelor, I'd call this the Most Shocking Elimination Ceremony Ever.

Tyra acknowledges that Heather and Jenah take the best photos, but brings up their communication and attitude issues. Jenah finally gets the photo, leaving Heather out in the cold. I know you guys might yell at me for this, but between the two of them, I think it was the right call. They both took fantastic photos, but Heather really had difficulty functioning in the Go-See and Covergirl commercial environments, and had a weaker walk. Still, tough, tough call. And were it not between the two of them, I absolutely would have sent Chantal home.

And Heather's elimination isn't all we have to cry about tonight--Twiggy, the judge lending the most credibility to this crazy show--will be replaced next season by "international supermodel" Paulina Porizkova, whom I've never heard of, due to "scheduling conflicts." Well, nuts. While I miss Janice for the utter insanity and unpredictability, I thought that Twiggy often had well-thought-out comments, and was far more level-headed (and nicer) than the other judges. We'll miss ya, Twiggster!

ABC will stream HD shows online!

This is so cool!

ABC has announced that starting this summer, it will be putting some of its shows online in HD at a 1280×720 resolution. ABC is a pioneer in the matter.

The summer launch of the HD channel around July will be a test for a better lineup set to be released in September.
Some of the shows that will be featured on ABC online during the summer in HD are Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, and Ugly Betty (all the shows I watch on ABC pretty much).

I say bravo ABC! Even though I rarely watch ABC shows online (or any other channel’s shows for that matter) because I record them, it’s nice to know that if I miss one I would be able to catch it again online and on HD.

The only question I have is how long will it take to load such a big file? From my previous experiences on abc.com, videos are not really that smooth, and I did have some problems finishing watching certain videos. I only hope ABC has found solutions to all of this, and that I will be able to watch some of the HD shows on my computer

MySpace joining the news feed bandwagon

Don Day

MySpace has launched its latest… um… innovation - the News Feed! OK, so it’s very smiliar to Facebook’s. Anyway, MySpacers can now opt-in or out of the system - deciding who they want to subscribe to, and who they want to block. Personally, I know several people who have turned it all off (me included). This is what has kept me from diding into Facebook - I don’t like to broadcast every little change in my MySpace life. Here’s a preview story from Reuters.

Do you think online tv aggregators should be illegal?

That’s a ‘big’ question but it’s one the industry needs to be able to answer given the changes taking place. We’re inviting you to join the conversation here at the Testcard TV Blog.

By bringing together the relevant views from representatives from the appropriate organisations and individuals we hope we help clarify the situation and provide value to those taking part.

To kick this off and with this news in mind and of course our own reaction to it we’d like to hear from you - what do you think? Do you think online tv aggregators should be illegal? Is linking to material that is uploaded/hosted without the correct licensing agreement in place illegal? Is linking to the site that is linking illegal?

There are many points of view. See the comments posted (one below) on Jack Schofield’s blog on The Guardian’s website as a starter.

Five Reasons We Love Desperate Housewives Again

Marcia Cross, Dana Delany and Eva Longoria, Desperate Housewives by Ron Tom/ABCMarcia Cross, Dana Delany and Eva Longoria, Desperate Housewives
1) Katherine Versus Bree These two badass Martha Stewart wannabes had a near smackdown over who made the best lemon meringue pie. Katherine won hands down, and it was the perfect recipe for disaster. Bree’s not gonna take it anymore.

2) Same-sex Appeal New neighbors Bob and Lee caused chaos on Wisteria Lane — not because they’re lovers, but because they put a loud, tacky, blindingly metallic fountain on their front lawn. Oddly, this gay-friendly show tends to keep its gays boorish (Bree’s sulky son Andrew) or benign (Gaby’s swishy pal Vern). But Bob and Lee are uppity, snoopy and lethal. On this street, that’s called survival.

3) The Parent Trap What would Housewives be without those ghastly buttinsky parents? There’s Mike Farrell as Victor’s conniving, Joe Kennedy-esque dad Milton, Shirley Knight as Bree’s ex-monster-in-law Phyllis and, best of all, Polly Bergen as Lynette’s moocher mom Stella, a rowdy pain in the ass who brings men home, puts weed in the brownies and teaches the kids how to mix a proper whiskey sour. As long as she’s not living with us, we hope she never leaves.

4) Carlos & Gaby Forever Divorce be damned, these two randy opportunists are back where they belong — together! But this season, Gaby and Carlos aren’t just joined at the groin, they’re joined at the soul. They get each other. They need each other. Sure, we could have done without that eeewy pubic-lice infestation that went from Edie to Carlos to Gaby to Victor, but hey, at least it was proof that this jalapeño-hot duo can overcome anything.

5) Female Bonding The show lost much of its magic last season when the wives’ lives splintered — Lynette peddled pizza, Gaby trolled after Victor, Susan dallied with Ian, and Bree vanished due to Marcia Cross’ real-life pregnancy. Now they’re back to being a team, having gloriously rebonded over a common enemy (that blasted Katherine) and the tragedies and triumphs of their sudsy lives (Susan’s having a baby! Lynette is cancer-free!). This series has never been about its men. It’s about fantastic female friends who genuinely adore and support one another.
